Filing and Maintenance Requirements
A valid licence from the Electrical Inspectorate (EI) is mandatory to install and operate elevators. According to Tamil Nadu Lifts Act, 1997 no owner of a place can erect or operate an elevator without permission granted under the Act. Licence is valid for a year and must be renewed on an annual basis.
An application for renewal of licence must be made not less than three months before the date of the expiry of the licence along with a fee of Rs 500. Licence is granted after inspection.
The licence is given on specific terms and conditions as per the Tamil Nadu Lifts Rules, 1997. The conditions stipulate that the licencee must report to the inspector defects in
the operation of the lift besides undertaking not to carry out any additions or alterations without the approval of the inspectorate.
The code of practices prescribed by the Bureau of Indian Standards, including the National Electrical Code, should be followed in respect of lift and its installation.
Whoever contravenes any of the provision of the Act or the rules or the terms and conditions of a permission or of a licence or a direction ….shall be punishable with fine which may extend to one thousand rupees and in case of continuing contravention with a further fine which may extend to fifty rupees for every day during which such contravention is continued after such conviction

Every application for a licence under sub-section (1) shall be made to the
Inspector in such form as may be prescribed and shall be accompanied by such fee not
exceeding one thousand rupees as may be prescribed.
On receipt of an application made under sub-section (2) the Inspector, after
making such inspection and enquiry as he deems necessary, may, either grant or refuse
